A MERPS character sheet for a defunct RPG product. MERPS was the Middle Earth Role-Playing System, published by Iron Crown Enterprises (ICE) back in the early 1990s.
This was an Indesign project, my first in years.
I have a number of these books on my bookshelf, and leafed through them on a whim. It's a clunky system of tables and d100s, and is easily an "advanced" rpg system due to its complexity. However, MERPS is a precursor to the d20 system, and you can see many of its influences on the industry standard.

When I was first getting into fantasy role-playing, D&D was banned from my house due to the satanic panic. MERP was allowed, however, as my father loved Lord of the Rings and there was no way my mother (overly religious in the 80s) could claim MERP was satanic.
We played it for years, quite happily. It eventually lead to playing Rolemaster, which was certainly a step up in terms of complexity, but I have nothing but fond memories of MERP - as well as a good size collection of the books!
